I should start a series of photos entitled “Miscellaneous Crap from My Desk,” because that’s what I end up shooting when I haven’t left the house all day. And given the rather eclectic nature of my work, there’s always an interesting collection from which to choose.

This is an abstract study of a set of Allen or hex wrenches. I shot it in two exposures with Pro Camera through a macro adapter that was tilted to distort the image and create some lens flares. I edited both shots in Best Camera using Light and Paris filters, then combined them in Blendcam.

No deep meaning here, just playing with the camera. I shot this through a macro adapter intended for an SLR and edited in PS Mobile.

To paraphrase Lloyd Bridges in Airplane!, looks like I picked the wrong day to give up refined sugar. That’s one of the things I’m giving up for Lent. But just look at this bucket of Moon Pies we snagged at Mardi Gras! This really will be a sacrifice.

The sight of the Knights of Revelry emblem float has always been one of the most iconic images of Mardi Gras to me. Where else will you see a guy dressed up masked jester, riding in a silver chalice

My hometown of Mobile, Alabama (as any good Southerner knows, your home is where you were born) must have the highest per capita consumption of Moon Pies of any city on the planet. When I was a kid, my cousins would go over to that copycat Mardi Gras in New Orleans. They would talk about how awesome it was. Then I would ask, “do they throw Moon Pies?” They would look at me with blank stares. Aha! Take that, you holiday usurpers!

In Mobile, the succes or failure of your Mardi Gras experience is judged not by beads, doubloons or stuffed animals, but by one factor above all others: Moon Pie count. Plus, there’s nothing better than eating your spoils.

Shot in Hipstamatic with the Helga Viking Lens and Kodot Verichrome film. Edited in TiltShift Generator.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Mobile Mardi Gras, Joe Cain was a store clerk who revived the carnival season in Mobile after the Civil War by dressing as up as the fictional Cherokee Chief Slacabamorinico and parading through the streets. His choice of alter ego was a way of thumbing his nose at the Union authorities, as the Cherokee had never been defeated in war.

Since the 1960s, Mobile has revived his memory with the annual Joe Cain Parade. Here is Wayne Dean, the fourth Chief Slac, leading today’s “people’s parade” in garb identical to old Joe’s.

Happy Joe Cain Day everybody!

Well, despite higher accumulations both north and south of us, our snow was a big let-down here in Chelsea. We made the most of it, however. My job for most of the day was to act as human target for my daughter and her friend.

Shot in Hipstamatic and edited in PS Mobile.

What have I done that has so offended the lawn gods? Patchy grass, continual lawnmower failures, crazy amounts of leaves, a constant stream in my driveway and now this!?
