I remember the first time I visited Riverchase Galleria. I thought it was the most amazing display of retail excess I had ever seen. Though I’m not much of a shopper, when I do visit the Glleria these days, I find myself lamenting her current condition.
Gone are the glory days when the place was packed to the gills on the night of the Christmas tree lighting and the feeling that you were in a place where every detail mattered. Part of the problem is the nationwide trend away from indoor malls, part is the natural evolution of retail shopping spaces and a good portion of blame must fall on management.
Today, there are many empty store fronts and fewer “prestige” stores. The parking garage is dark, dank and in desperate need of pressure washing. The formerly seasonal carousel is now a permanent fixture, meaning the beautiful food court fountains have been dormant for years. And you can’t walk underneath that glorious skylight without being hounded by kiosk vendors who are only slightly less annoying than carnival barkers. Will the old girl ever return to her former glory? Right now, the prospects seem as dim as the faulty flourescent tubes that flicker in the parking area.
