This is Tom Clark. He’s an Atlanta-based actor and all around nice guy. He’s also the spokesman for the TV campaign I directed last week. This week, I’m in Atlanta (Old Chamblee, actually) working with the client in post-production.

The shot below is not final, but I should point out Tom’s not really standing in front of that truck. In fact, he’s not even standing in those woods. When we shot that truck, Tom was still in Atlanta. We set up an outdoor greenscreen studio, made some more rain and shot Tom the next day.

The little graph in the lower right of my desktop is the MacPro’s Activity Monitor app. I’ve got Final Cut Pro and Compressor splitting duty chewing through a couple hundred clips, transcoding them from the camera’s native h264 files to Apple ProRes – basically making them easier to work with for editing. From the looks of the monitor, I’ve got at least half of my computing power to spare.

Shot in Hipstamatic using John S lens and Ina’s 1969 film.

This is what I’ve been staring at pretty much all day. Installing software is very boring.

This is one of my favorite people in the production business, Randy “Mongo” Halpern, the journeyman key grip of Russian Jewish birth with the name from Blazing Saddles. It was great working with Mongo forthw first time in ages this week. In fact, I could say the same for a whole host of crew, including gaffer extraordinaire Mitchell Sargent and key grip Jerry Kelly (both in the background.)

I raise my Diet Mt. Dew to a great crew of old friends and new who made me look as if I knew what I was doing this week.

This the father and son team of Scott and Braden Baker. Scott is a friend of ours from church and has appeared on in of our previous productions. Braden did some nice acting in a recent children’s musical at church, so I thought they’d be perfect as a father and son on a hunting trip for this new commercial.

Along with Bailey, our pastor’s English Golden Retriever, these two gamely ran around in the rain all day for me. Here, they’re getting ready to do their dialogue in the car while I stay outside the vehicle in our manmade deluge.

Today was all about the dolly and the greenscreen on our shoot. Our grip dept. — key grip Jerry Kelly and dolly grip Randy “Mongo” Halpern — did a great job setting up the long dolly run my creative vision required. We only did five of these shots today, but all the details, variables and moving parts meant those shots took up about 6-7 hours of our day.

…is another man’s wait. Especially in our business, where hurry up and wait is our standard M.O. While AC Ben Greer and I were trying to remember things we’d already forgotten about the 5D Mark II, the rest of the cast and crew, unknowingly, were headed toward two hours of OT. Great day with some beautiful results, though.

We did a couple of walk-thrus of Old Baker Farm today in preparation for the Auto Ventshade shoot. It’s a glorious, if challenging, location owned by kind, genuine people. We’ll be out there for the next three days.

PS Mobile, then Camera Bag using the Silver filter.
