It’s been a busy week with lots of driving between various cities, so I grabbed a series of shots that speak to the character of our beloved Heart of Dixie. This one is a belated entry for Monday.
When visitors enter Alabama from Tennessee along I-65, they are greeted by what is arguably the most audacious piece of welcome center brick-a-brack in the world. This is a Saturn 1B rocket. Developed in nearby Huntsville, this rocket was used for early missions of the Apollo program while its (much) bigger brother, the Saturn V, was still being developed. Sure, New York, Paris, Seattle and other places have their landmark phallic symbols, but theirs aren’t packing 1.6 million lbf of thrust to launch you around the moon!
